The core qualities and competencies of the intensive and critical care nurse, a meta‐ethnography

Aim To develop a conceptual framework of the core qualities and competencies intensive critical care nurse based on experiences patients, their relatives nurses. Design Meta-ethnography. Data sources A comprehensive, systematic search in seven databases supplemented with hand, citation reference search. Sources published from 2007 to 2019 were included. Review Methods Noblit Hare's understanding meta-ethnography work eMERGE project have directed synthesis. Results Nineteen studies included synthesized into framework. Overarching theme: ‘feeling safe being safe’, subtheme: ‘creating confidence motivation’ categories (CCs): ‘technical skills biophysical knowledge’; ‘inter/intra professional teamwork skills’; ‘communication (with patients relatives)’; ‘constant attentive bedside presence’; participative care’; through daily good atmosphere having supportive encouraging attitude’; ‘building relationship maintain self-esteem’. Conclusion By including perspectives nurses, comprise elements both patient safety feeling safety. The outlines concepts necessary ensure person-centred care. Further research should involve each perspective validate strengthen findings.
